If I could have my favourite brew, for every time this question pops up, then I would be one totally delighted bloke. Yes, there is one question that often follows me ominously around everywhere I go. Curious friends and nosy relatives often ask me, “What’s the bloody difference between craft beers and commercially produced ones?” whenever they see me, nursing my lovely, craft ale.

Once and for all, I want to put an end to this debate and here’s my tuppence worth on the topic.

MAINSTREAM BEERS VS CRAFT BEERS

When people usually think of beer, the chances are that craft ale isn’t the first thing that pops into their minds. And can we really blame them? After all, microbreweries are called “micro” for a particular reason. They are small; do not produce gallons of beers that are commercially available and cater to a small niche of the audience, who value them.

On the contrary, mass produced beers are produced on a massive scale and are available everywhere from your local watering hole to supermarket aisles, either in bottles or cans. I am pretty sure that the first sip of beer you had in your life would have been a “mass produced” or commercial beer. You know the ones.

So, if you didn’t fall head over heels in love with the drink at the first sip, it isn’t your fault actually. It’s because you haven’t yet tasted the good ones yet.

We can hear you saying, “What’s the big difference? After all, they are both the same drink!” Actually, the difference is quite evident, like night and day.

GET READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY BY THE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TASTES OF CRAFT BEERS

Craft beer is a beer that is produced at a micro brewery. As the name implies, a micro-brewery is one that is small in scale and does not produce as many gallons of beers as compared to commercial breweries. The emphasis is on quality over quantity. The taste is entirely different, and your taste buds are in for a real treat.

Craft brews make use of local ingredients that are fresh, and the brewing process isn’t completely mechanised. Some micro-breweries even brew by hand, lending a unique flavour to the end drink that is unlike anything you have ever tasted.

EXPLORE THE SIGNATURE FLAVOURS & UNIQUE AROMAS OF CRAFT BEERS

Of course, each craft brew is different. This is because different breweries experiment with different flavours and ingredients. This is what makes craft beers so appealing to beer lovers. They love that they can try out different flavours, every single time they pick up a mug of a signature beer.

Indian masala, peppermint, eggnog, hibiscus, Filter-Kaapi flavoured – whatever be your fancy you are sure to find a craft beer that tickles your taste buds.

IF CRAFT BEERS TASTE BETTER, THEN WHY DON’T COMMERCIAL BREWERIES SWITCH OVER TO THEM?

The simple answer to this is: Economics. It’s more cost-effective and cheaper to produce a commercial beer when compared to a signature, craft brew. Commercial beer makes use of cheap ingredients and mechanical brewing techniques that churn out barrels of beer every single day. Also, commercial breweries employ snazzy marketing techniques to mask the subdued flavour of their brews.

On the contrary, craft brewers are fiercely proud of their brews. Right from choosing high-quality ingredients like the best barley and the perfect hops, each step of the craft brewing process is handled with the utmost precision and nourished with truckloads of love to produce the desired flavour and perfect consistency.

WRAPPING IT UP

There, you have it, my differences between craft beers and commercially produced beers. In a nutshell, I prefer craft beer for the unique tastes, high-quality and the freedom to break free from stale, flavourless mainstream brews.
