  • TOP 10 UNUSUAL BEER FLAVOURS THAT YOU’LL WANT TO TRY

TOP 10 UNUSUAL BEER FLAVOURS THAT YOU’LL WANT TO TRY

Over the last few years, brewers all over the world have been concocting strange brews with weird ingredients. The trend has caught up and nary has a day gone by without hearing about an unusual flavour. From an Icelandic beer, infused with the testicles of a whale to pilsners made from human pee – the weirdness just keeps on increasing.

However, here’s a list of 10 unusual beer flavours that you will actually want to try. We have kept the grossness to a minimum and focussed on exotic, never heard before flavours that you’ll want to taste.

A BEER FOR YOUR SWEET TOOTH

Who said beer lovers can’t satisfy their sweet tooth with a brew? The Shorts Brewing Company out of Michigan has created a “Key Lime Pie” flavoured beer. Just like the sweet dessert, this beer is brewed with fresh lime, graham crackers, milk sugar and marshmallow fluff.

It has a prominent “Sweet and Tarty” flavour. And what more, the brew won the Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival of 2010.

So, the next time, you get a sugar craving, crack open this one.

    EVERYTHING TASTES BETTER WITH BACON

From breakfasts to desserts, Bacon has made its way onto our food plates for all meals. Rogue Ales, a brewer based in Oregon, USA has created an unusual concoction titled, “Collision of Crazies.” The beer is a mix of the flavours of applewood-smoked bacon and Canadian maple syrup.

Pair this one with a plate of fresh out of the oven pastries or pork to bring out the flavours.

    WINE OR BEER?

Have you always swayed between this challenging question, “Wine or Beer?” Do you prefer both the grapes and the hops? Can’t decide on one?

Why choose one, when you can have both. The Dogfish Head, based in Delaware has created a brew called as the “Noble Rot.” Fermentable sugars from two varieties of grapes are added to brew a beer that tastes like white wine with tart undertones.

This is the closest you can have of both the worlds. The makers suggest pairing it with shellfish or Gouda for a unique drink.

    THE TASTE OF CHRISTMAS

Do you love the holiday season? Well, now you can enjoy a sip of the aroma of the holidays right throughout the year. The Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi is a Christmasy beer that myrrh and frankincense bark in the wort. It is a golden syrup that is reminiscent of the gifts of the three wise men.

This is totally unlike regular Christmasy ales. The spicy flavours go well with the musty flavours to create a unique drink that spreads holiday cheer, every time you open it.

    A DESSERTY BEER

It looks like desserts masquerading as beers are quite popular. After, the key lime pie, here’s another Desserty Beer. This time it’s everyone’s favourite dessert in beer form – the Crème Brulee.

Have you often stuffed yourself full of the main course, that you don’t have any more space in your tummy? Now, don’t skip out on desserts just because you’re full. Instead, sip in the form of beers. The “Southern Tier Crème Brulee Stout” is a beer that tastes just like French, Crème Brulee.

    SIP ON CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Do you adore this childhood drink, even now? Now, chocolate milk has gotten an adult twist with this brew. The “Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout” is brewed with sugar, milk and milk chocolate. It has hints of vanilla blended with the roasted malts and milk chocolate flavours.

This beer tastes just like sipping a carton of creamy chocolate milk and is a created from Odell Brewing, Colorado.

    SET YOUR TONGUE ON FIRE

After a look at dessert beers, it’s time to spice things up a bit. The Chipotle Ale from Rogue Ales, Oregon, heats things up. This beer is a tribute to Juan De La Cueva, a 15th-century Spanish write. In one of his books, he writes about a traditional, long-forgotten Mexican dish of seedless chipotles paired with beer.

This deep golden ale gives a strong chilly flavour. Also, you can get smoky and malty undertones. Not for the tender-hearted.

A BEER FOR THE WEIGHT WATCHERS

Is a bowl of oatmeal your go-to meal to shed those few extra kilos? Then, you must try out, “Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout” from Austin’s, Craft Pride. This beer contains English roasted barley, flaked oats and Belgian chocolate for a dash of flavour.

    FOR THE SEAFOOD LOVERS

The Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout is brewed with fresh-river oysters. This brew is from the taps of Flying Dogs, a Maryland based brewery. The proceeds from the sale of this beer go into restoring the habitat of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.

IS IT A DESSERT, SEAFOOD OR BEER?

Fans of chocolates, lobster, and beer can rejoice. You can taste all your three favourite food items in one drink. The Dogfish Head is where you can find this oceanic, rich and velvety pour.

    WRAPPING IT UP

Have you tried any unusual beer flavours? Or do you prefer sticking to your tried and tested ales and lagers? Let us know your feedback on it.

  • ADVENTURES IN EXPERIMENTAL BREWING – WHAT, WHY AND HOW?

ADVENTURES IN EXPERIMENTAL BREWING – WHAT, WHY AND HOW?

Have you heard about “Experimental Brewing?” One of the most fascinating aspects of being a craft brewer is that you can experiment with your recipes. Yes, you heard that right! Unlike commercial brewers who use the same old recipes for years, craft brewers can create their recipes from scratch. Doesn’t that sound great?!!

However, with that said, you should take experimental brewing with a pinch of salt. After all, no one wants to end up mouthing a gallon of failed “experiments.”

This guide will help you get started with your Adventures in Experimental Brewing.

The broad Spectrum of Experimental Brewing

As you move from pre-packaged brewing kits or classic recipes, you have two options before you.

Begin with simple experimentation: You can start small by changing the variety of hop you use in a pale ale or by altering the aroma.

Go Crazy: This is the route for more adventurous brewers. You can add any ingredient that strikes your fancy. Who knows you may end up creating the next, new sensation in the world of beers? 😉

    A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO EXPERIMENTATION

Some brewers, who are more inclined to a scientific approach, begin by manipulating a single variable at a time. They then make a note of the changes, the impacts of the ingredient in altering the final product and so on.

Once you have done quite a few experiments, you’ll be able to find the perfect new recipe. While we believe that the fun of being a craft brewer is designing your own recipes, we also advocate having some strategy or method in your experiments. This way you’ll be able to recreate your brews anytime you want.

MOVING ON TO THE ADVANCED STAGES

Once you have mastered the basics of experimentation, you can move onto the next levels. This is where you perfect your techniques and refine your recipes to create tasty beers consistently. If your results are highly variable, then it can add complexity and end up stressing you. So, make sure to perfect the initial stages of experimentation, before you move on to the advanced levels.

Here, in this article, we provide you with valuable insights for conducting your brewing experiments successfully. This way you can create interesting brews on your first attempt and achieve the target flavour you wish to accomplish.

    RESEARCH

Any experiment begins with a lot of underground research. Make yourself aware of all that you need to know about the variables in a recipe. Read about techniques and ingredients. The internet is your ally in this step.

Begin with a simple Google search and check out blogs of craft brewers. Get your hands on expert written books if possible.

Remember that, the more you Research, lower are the chances of ending up with a mediocre, barely consumable beer.

Here are a few things to get you started:

    • What are the types of processing?
    • What seasonal ingredients can you add to your brews?
    • What is the impact of adding non-conventional ingredients like cocoa, coffee, coconut flakes, fresh fruit, herbal teas, juices in your brews?
    • What is the influence of temperatures and timings on your final product?
    • What affects the quality the most?

    SOURCING AND EVALUATION OF INGREDIENTS

While you can purchase your ingredients online, we recommend you buy them at physical brick and mortar stores where you can smell, feel and taste the ingredients. Spice shops, local farmers markets, organic groceries, are superb locations for buying brewing requirements.

Once you have bought all that you need, the next step is to evaluate all the ingredients. Look at each element and find out its smell, taste, and texture. Steep it in hot water and check if its properties change. This evaluation process will help you get a clear idea of the impact of different ingredients in the final product.

A WORD OF ADVICE: AVOID GIMMICKS

While we are ready to sample exotic flavours and unique brews, we feel that there is a limit to the weirdness.

Don’t fall into the trap of experimenting just for creating something out of the box.

While gimmicky beers sound fun to read on a menu, that doesn’t improve the taste in any way. We are speaking about wacky ingredients like wood chips in a beer, and those brews that are created just for the sake of records like “The Sourest beer in the Whole World.”

    CLOSING WORDS

While craft beers are all about experiments, the ultimate goal should be creating a brew that is pleasurable to drink and not for just boasting about how and why you brewed it.

With that said, no rule says you shouldn’t go crazy with your experiments. After all, most of the favourite, wacky but fun beers like the Pizza beer or the Beard Beer, wouldn’t have been possible if not for crazy experimentation.

    OKTOBERFEST

    Where: Munich in Germany

This is probably what comes to your mind when you think of the term, “Beer Festival.” It’s the undoubtedly the largest beer festival in the world and runs for sixteen days. If you can attend only one beer festival in your lifetime, then it should be this one.

With more than 6.9 million litres of beer consumed during the fest and over 6.2 million visitors every year, this is the pinnacle of all beer fests. Started in 1810, the festival has been celebrated for more than two centuries, making it the oldest beer fest in the world.

Beer paired with traditional German food and Bavarian costumes is the highlight of this event. Oktoberfest is so popular that it’s celebrated in several other beer loving nations like Vietnam, Brazil and Hong Kong.

    GREAT BRITISH BEER FESTIVAL

    Where: London, England

    When: Early August

Also nicknamed as the “Biggest Pub in the World,” this fest is conducted by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). The CAMRA hosts several other beer festivals in the UK. CAMRA reported that it sold one pint of beer every half-second during the event. A big draw of this festival is the wide variety of live entertainment and traditional pub games.

    GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL

    Where: Denver, Colorado, USA

When: Late September to early October

This is a three-day event that is more than a beer festival. It’s the ultimate beer competition. GREAT WORLD BEER FESTIVAL

Nicknamed as the “United Nations of Beer,” this is a two-day event. When you pay the small registration fee, you receive a festival glass that you can use to sample unlimited varieties of beers from over 100 American microbrewers.

This festival promotes craft beers, so you can be pretty assured that you won’t be sampling regular commercial beers.

    VERMONT’S BREWERS FESTIVAL

    Where: Burlington, Vermont, USA

    When: Mid July

The state of Vermont contains more breweries per person than any other state in the US. The biggest specialty of these breweries is that most of them are micro breweries. With such an ardent love for beer running in the state, it’s only right that it hosts the oldest beer festival in the East coast.

This event is a good place to expand your tastes and sample new flavours like barley wines and fruit beers. Brewers can participate in this event only by invitation. This ensures that you get to sample some of the best and innovative beers in the country.

    MONDIAL DE LA BIERE

    Where: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

    When: Early June

This is the biggest beer fest in Canada. Top breweries from all over the world participate in this event and showcase their finest brews. Most of these beers are not often sold in the market. So, it’s a great place to sample some rare varieties.

Another major draw of this event is that professors at a local beer school( yep, there is even a school that teaches you the craft of beer brewing) offer workshops and seminars on all aspects of beer manufacturing.

    CONSTATTER VOLKSFEST

    Where: Stuttgart, Germany

When: Late September to early October

This two-week event is technically an autumn fair but is often referred as a beer fest by the locals. While not strictly a beer festival, it’s the second biggest beer drinking event in the world, right next to the Oktoberfest held in Munich, Germany.

A twenty-six-metre column decorated with fruits, the world’s largest portable Ferris wheel, and live oompah bands are some of the highlights of this event. Since this festival begins just a week after the Oktoberfest; you can attend both on your visit to Germany if you plan it right.

    THE BEER WEEKEND AT BRUSSELS

    Where: Brussels, Belgium

    When: Early September

This event is organised by the Knighthood of the Brewers Mash Staff and the Belgian Brewers Association. You can understand that Belgians are pretty much serious when it comes to their beer since the Knighthood is often considered as the modern-day interpretation of the famed, centuries, old beer maker guild.

More than 225 beers are offered at this fest. Apart from sampling new varieties, you can also ask questions to the brewers on anything and everything about beer.

    OREGON BREWERS FESTIVAL

    Where: Portland, Oregon, USA

    When: Late July

It’s a four-day event and is one of the longest running craft beer festivals in the USA. More than 80 craft breweries participate in this festival. You can sample some unique selections like the fruity watermelon beer that is a crowd favourite.

Some craft brewers offer unique beers that are exclusive to the festival. This event is a great way to know more about different beers around the country and to sample some finest craft beers.

BITTER AND TWISTED INTERNATIONAL BOUTIQUE BEER FESTIVAL

    Where: Maitland, Australia

    When: Beginning of November

The highlight of this event is undoubtedly the venue. It takes place at a long-abandoned maximum security jail. With more than 50 craft beers, the event’s organisers boast that “This is the best prison food you can find anywhere in the world.” With live entertainment, huge varieties of food and beer, we’re pretty sure that this is the only jail in the world where the inmates leave drunker than when they entered.

  • TASTE BEER LIKE NEVER BEFORE. FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FROTHY DRINK. #CRAFTBEERS

TASTE BEER LIKE NEVER BEFORE. FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FROTHY DRINK. #CRAFTBEERS

Just a few years back, pubs were simple and unfussy, and your choices were limited to a handful of commercial beers that were available in bottles and packets of peanuts.

Usher in the era of globalization and craft beers. Today, the entire pub culture has undergone a massive transformation and bars today are no more the gloomy, dreary places for broken hearts. With the rise of gastropubs and themed ones, pubs are now the coolest spots in town.

Beer now enjoys an elite status and has a cult following. But, does that mean the rules of drinking beer have changed? Not sure, how to navigate through the unknown waters of craft beer territory? Worried, if you’ll put a wrong step forward and end up committing a major social faux pas?

Fear not, we are here to help you out. In this article, we list out the etiquette rules for drinking craft beers. Irrespective of whether you’re a craft beer virgin or a seasoned craft beer connoisseur, this guide is sure to help you get the basics right.

    Let’s dig in.

    NO ONE LOVES A FREELOADER

With that said, most craft brewers encourage their customers to try out a few of their samples before ordering a full glass. In fact, many breweries offer free samples to help find out the right beer that suits their tastes.

With that said, you should know where to draw the line. It’s disrespectful if you keep on trying sample after sample, and leave without ordering anything.

VOICE YOUR CRITICISM IN THE RIGHT WAY

This reminds me of one time when at a craft beer festival, I watched a woman rush up to the stalls and request a beer. Just beer and she didn’t mention her preferences. After tasting it, she declared her criticism openly and within earshot of a dozen people. She kept on repeating her displeasure with the beer and even went on to force others not to taste it.

You have to remember that there’s a huge difference between not liking a particular beer and the beer being bad. What appeals to one person, may be off-putting to another. It all depends on the tastes.

Most brewers are open to honest feedback, but it’s good if you can temper the criticism. Diplomacy never hurts.

    RESPECT THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS

This is an extension of the above point. While most people understand that they have unique tastes aren’t ready to acknowledge and accept the opinions of others. This is often manifested on social media where you can see fans of hop heads criticizing malty beer drinkers, beer snobs taunting light beer drinkers, people who woe about the prices of beer and several others.

Let’s celebrate the diversity of beer fans and drinkers. This is what makes “Beers” one of the most favourite drinks in the world.

ACCEPT THAT BEER IS A DRINK FOR ALL SEXES

You would have grown up hearing the saying, “Beer is a man’s drink, while wine is a woman’s drink.” This one is no longer relevant and is far from the truth. In fact, an increasing number of women end their day with their favourite beer and even know more about beer than half the male drinkers.

Raise a glass to beer fans irrespective of their gender.

    CUT OUT ON HEAVY PERFUMES

Strong odours like fragrances and perfumes can interfere with the notes of the beer. So, go light on the fragrances.

HONOUR THE RULES OF THE PUB

If the pub has a policy of “No outside food,” try to follow it without arguing with the manager. Leave your snacks at home and get ready to enjoy a new culinary experience.

    DON’T FEEL SHY TO ASK

If you have any queries regarding the flavour of the beer or not sure which beer to begin with, all you have to do is ask. Most servers and bar tenders in craft breweries love to talk about their beers. So, when you open up, you can be pretty sure that you will receive helpful advice that will make a beer connoisseur out of you in no time.

    TIP YOUR SERVERS

This one has nothing to do with craft beers but is for your generosity. Most of the servers in craft breweries are college going kids, who are looking to supplement their regular income. So, ensure that you tip them generously to help them out.

A good deed you do is a good deed that comes back to you.

    ENJOY YOUR DRINK

Craft breweries are more than places where you drown yourself in pint after pint to get drunk. Instead of just getting drunk, try to take the time to appreciate the various flavours and tones in beers. We can guarantee that you’re in for a pleasurable culinary experience like never before.

    DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

This is the most important of all beer etiquettes. If you plan to get drunk, assign a driving buddy before you go out for the evening. If you’ll be heading home alone, then it makes sense to stop before your beer glass begins to double.

    THE LAST WORD

The world of Craft beers is quite welcoming and is very accommodating. Shed your inhibitions and come fall in love with a whole new world of beers.

  • ALL THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE LAUNCHING A MICRO-BREWERY

ALL THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE LAUNCHING A MICRO-BREWERY

Admit it. You’ve always day dreamed about opening your own brewery. In those rosy dreams, you’ve always pictured yourself as a hearty brew master serving mugs of frothy ale while building a good rapport with your devoted fans.

Well, the reality isn’t all that smooth. While running a craft brewery is 1000X times better than being slaved to a desk from 9 to 5, you need to put in massive tons of work and effort before you can create a successful microbrewery.

Our aim here isn’t to discourage you from your grand plans. But, we wish to help you be better prepared by gearing you up to face the realities. Consider this article as an eye-opener and your guide to prepare for launching your microbrewery.

We’ve gathered the best tips from craft brewery pioneers across the country, to help you launch a successful micro-brewery.

IN INDIA, BREWING IS MORE THAN SELLING

If you thought that you could just brew your unique drinks and use your smart marketing skills to put the beer on counters all over the country, then you need to think again. If you wish to make a hefty profit in selling your beer, then it’s essential to serve it.

You may not have the spaces or capital to set up a fine-dining establishment on your premises. But that doesn’t mean you have to skip the restaurant/pub/bar aspect of the business. Even if you can only accommodate a handful of tables and a small bar counter, it’s better than entirely skipping it.

In most parts of the country, the beer you brew must be sold on premises. The only exception to this rule is the state of the Maharashtra that allows you to distribute your brews.

The moral of the Story: If you brew, look for innovative ways to sell it at your site apart from figuring out the right distribution channels.

DON’T COMPROMISE QUALITY FOR CHEAP EQUIPMENT

This one comes as a sticker shock to many aspiring brewmasters. Setting up a craft brewery and marketing your products requires significant investment. Something around 80+ lakhs is a decent capital to start.

The fulcrum of making your brews successful is getting the right equipment, to begin with. While a range of Chinese counterfeit equipments have flooded the Indian market and are available at low costs, they aren’t worth it in the long run.

Don’t try to save a few bucks by compromising on the quality of your equipment. This not only ends up ruining the taste of your brew but could end up severely damaging your reputation. So, always look for the best quality brewing equipment in India.

Apart from the cost of the equipment, you also have to factor in the licensing, distribution rights, deposits, property rent or the cost of buying your own space, setting up a tap room, marketing, and other miscellaneous charges.

DON’T GET DISHEARTENED WITH DELAYS AND EARLY LOSSES

Microbreweries need to first rent out or buy a space, purchase the required equipment before they can even apply for a license. The entire process is lengthy, and you have to get the complete approval before you can sell your first mug of beer. The time frame for this whole process can be anywhere from 12 to 24 months.

So, don’t be discouraged by the lengthy period nor take the initial losses to heart. Once people taste the unique flavour of your brews, you can be pretty sure that you’ve got them hooked for life.

THERE IS SURE TO BE SOME LEVEL OF BUREAUCRATIC INTERFERENCE

If you think that you’ve crossed all the major hurdles once you procure the license, then you’re wrong. You’ve just crossed half the distance. You have miles to go. But, we promise that once you get the hang of it, the going gets easier.

It takes around two months for your beer labels to get approved. The next challenge is to find a qualified head brewer. Apart from this, if you plan to sell your beer at any event, you have to ensure that the organisers hold a liquor license to sell the beer at the event. That’s not all. Every single crate of beer that leaves your premises has to be approved by an excise offer. Without the signature of these officers, you can’t ship the beer outside your brewery.

YET, THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR MICROBREWERS AND BREWERIES

If you think all this is an uphill task, then here’s something to cheer you up. While the initial going may feel extremely tough, the industry has plenty to offer. Unlike western markets, which have reached saturation levels, microbreweries are just now beginning to crop up in India. This means that you have a huge market that is untapped.

With a mixture of passion, dedication and the right support from the craft brewing community, launching a microbrewery will prove to be incredibly rewarding. And always remember that the craft brewery community is highly supportive. “Craft brewers aren’t competing against each other but fighting against the system and trying to win commercial beers.”

So, you’re sure to get plenty of support from other craft brewers along the way. All that you need is passion and the belief that you can run a successful microbrewery.

  • THROW OPEN YOUR DOORS AND LIVEN UP EVENINGS AT YOUR BREWERY, WITH BEER TASTING EVENTS

THROW OPEN YOUR DOORS AND LIVEN UP EVENINGS AT YOUR BREWERY, WITH BEER TASTING EVENTS

Looking to spruce up evenings at your bar? Why not host a fun, beer tasting event that caters to the corporate crowd, businessmen, entrepreneurs, college-goers and gangs of friends?

Let’s take a look at the few reasons to open up your brewery for Beer Tasting Events.

REASON #1: OFFER SOMETHING UNIQUE AND ATTRACTIVE FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND PROFESSIONALS

More and more corporate firms are looking for fun, unique ways to engage their teams. They are bored of doing the same routine team-building activities on their outings. They are looking for interesting ways to help the team bond while keeping it casual.

Capitalize on this trend by hosting a beer tasting evening at your brewery.

REASON #2: THE INCREASING POPULARITY OF BEER TASTING EVENTS

Beer is the new wine – especially, for tasting events. You would have heard or even attended wine tasting events and witnessed the massive crowds. The same goes for beer tastings. It can excite a huge crowd and convince people to go beyond their comfort zones. At tasting events, people are more open to trying out new flavours.

What better way, to draw in a cult following for your new brew?

REASON #3: REACH OUT TO NEW POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS AND IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS

Beer tasting events are an excellent way to boost your sales and carve a name for yourself. Once people sample the different types of beers you have on hand, they are more likely to return again and again, becoming your loyal customers.

Now, that we’ve convinced you to open your brewery for beer tasting events, let’s get down to business. Here are a few tips that you must keep in mind while organizing a beer tasting at your brewery.

The atmosphere of your Brewery plays a Key Role

The main aim of a beer tasting event is to let your customers have a great time, while they sample different types of beers that they usually wouldn’t try. So, ensure that you have the right atmosphere for it.

Keeping the place warm and inviting is helpful in persuading your tasters to come back again and order drinks off the menu. Ensure that the lightings you have in place make your offerings look appetizing. While a loud and lively bar is good for business during regular days, it’s preferable to opt for a relaxed ambience during the tasting. A live music band that plays a few songs in the background without disturbing the proceedings is a good idea.

Customers can focus on new tastes and evaluate if they like it or not, better when they aren’t distracted by noise.

Try organising your event based on a Theme

Themes are a great way to maximise the fun quotient of your evening. If it’s holiday season, you can try something like, “The 12 Beers of Christmas”. Or if it’s summer, you can opt for summery flavours to keep your guests refreshed and so on.

Tap into your creative side to come up with out-of-the-box themes to keep your guests impressed.

Have the right employees on hand

The role of servers or bartenders is crucial to the success of your evening. They must be knowledgeable and able to give detailed info about each brew. If you serve a range of beers, then your customers may be clueless on where to start and how to proceed.

Your employees must be able to explain and make smart recommendations based on the customers’ tastes. For instance, if a person is tasting beer for the first time, then starting with unconventional flavours isn’t that good an idea. Also, if a customer has distinct tastes and preferences, then suggesting something totally outside his/her comfort zone, doesn’t bode well.

Alternatively, you can set-up a podium or a mic, where you explain about each brew and its flavour profile to your entire audience.

    Cleanse the Palate between Brews

In a tasting event, it’s essential to cleanse or refresh the palate between different beers. So, place a glass of chilled water at the tables and ensure that it’s refilled, to help guests refresh their palates. This will help your audience appreciate the flavours and aromas better.

Impress your Audience with Classy Glassware

The second best thing at a tasting, after the beer, is the wide variety of fancy glassware. Impress your guests with different glasses. Beer mugs or glasses with a narrow mouth and a wide bowl help to trap the aromas, providing a better experience. Also, ensure that you use smaller glassware compared to your regular serving ware, as after all, people have come just to taste and not drink the entire mug.

    The Right Eats

You can provide snacks to your guests to keep them satiated during the tastings. Weak flavoured snacks like crackers, an assortment of nuts, unsalted pretzels, and mild cheeses are good options as you don’t want to overpower the palates of your guests with different flavours.

You can also fancy up things, by providing different courses of foods with each beer. Take the time to serve each course as a beer and food pairing, works best when enjoyed leisurely.

    Add some Games

You can further lighten the mood by having some old-fashioned party games. Try including a blind tasting event. Serve a beer to your guests without revealing the make or type. Let them guess the beer. Let the winners enjoy a free glass of their favourite beer and so on.

    WRAPPING IT UP

Hosting a beer tasting for businessmen, professionals, college-goers, and gangs of friends is a great way to liven up evenings at your brewery. This helps to increase your clientele and also provides people opportunities to explore new beers.

  • IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE THAT HAS BEER IN IT

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE THAT HAS BEER IN IT

Beer. The marvellous drink that elevates spirits! Well, it’s probably the alcohol, but nevertheless, you can’t argue that it’s damn good.

There are millions and millions of people out there, who reach for a mug of beer every time they feel happy. People drink it at home and gather with friends to celebrate at a bar. People drink it when their favourite team lifts the cup or even while their favourite team loses.

This feel-good beverage has been interlinked with our lives for centuries. It has valiantly stood the test of time. From being brewed in huge pots in taverns to being bottled in massive industrial plants, it definitely has come a long way.

While there’s no arguing that almost everyone loves a good mug of beer, yet there are many of us who don’t know much about it. Maybe we’re in so love with the drink that taking a look at its long, rich history never occurred to us or maybe we didn’t give it a thought before.

Well, here at Rohit Jafa Brewing Solutions blog, we are here to set things right. We believe that every man and woman should know the basics of their favourite brew like where it’s from, the different types and how to drink it. We mean if you’re going to drink it all through your life, why not learn a bit about it? After all, knowledge is power, ain’t it?

HAS BEER HAS BEEN AROUND FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS?

The first thing to know is that beer dates back a long time ago in history. The earliest known presence of this drink is around 3500-3100 BC in Western Iran, in the mountainous regions of Zagros. Archaeologists have uncovered Sumerian and Egyptian artefacts that prove the existence of this drink. In fact, ancient Egyptians used beer as currency.

And another important point to note is that Beer played a crucial role in saving civilisations. Long ago, when water was contagious and had hordes of pathogens, beer was safe, clean and helped to prevent the spread of diseases. Take a look at “How beer saved the World,” in this enlightening and entertaining documentary here.

    SO, WHAT IS BEER EXACTLY?

Today there are thousands of types of beers. From mass-produced bottled beers to niche, flavourful craft beers, you can find something that your taste buds love. Though there are so many types of beer, all of them have the following ingredients: water, hops, yeast, some starch, a clarifying agent, and a flavouring agent.

It’s basically a fermented drink that is produced by the action of yeast on the starch. It’s full of essential vitamins, minerals and above all full of flavour and zing.

OK, GOT IT, BUT WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF BEER?

While one beer is different from the next one, all beer can be boiled down to the following eight types.

Ales – They make use of top fermenting yeast. They are further divided into:

    • Wheat Beers – Cloudy beers with a light profile. It’s an ideal summertime drink.
    • Brown Ale – A native beer of England, America, and Belgium. Brown ales from England have a nutty, malty flavour while that from America have a citrusy aroma.
    • Pale Ales – Most popular type of beer in the world. Amber ale, blondes, American pale ales, Scotch ales and India pale ales are some examples.

Lager – These beers make use of bottom fermenting yeast. They have the following classifications:

    • Pilsners – First brewed in Czechoslovakia, they have a fragrant hoppy aroma and are clear and light in colour.
    • Bocks – Strong beers that are originally from Germany. They are malty and have little to no hops flavouring.
    • Dunkels – They are dark brown and have a smooth, malty flavour.
    • Porters and Stouts – Porter is a strong brown beer, while stouts are a stronger version of Porters.

WOW, THAT’S GREAT. NOW HOW DO I DRINK DIFFERENT TYPES OF BEERS?

In truth, a regular pint glass is sufficient to drink all kinds of beers. However, some glasses enhance the flavour profile of a few beers. For instance, pilsners have a particular type of glass that is smaller than pint glasses. They are tall, slender and help to reveal the carbonation and colour of pilsners.

Weizner is another glass that has a large round top and is ideal for wheat beers. Tulip glasses have a body that resembles the flower and are perfect for Scottish ales and IPAs.

With that said, remember that just because you aren’t sure of the glass to use for a particular type of beer, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy it. In fact, few beer connoisseurs swear that beers taste better in bottles and cans.

So, whatever rocks your boat! 

ANYTHING ELSE THAT I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD OF BEERS?

Yes, we just want you to kindle the adventurer in you when it comes to beers. There are so many types available. Be brave and try out all that you can. Sure, it’s ok to have a favourite drink or two but explore and try new flavours. You’re sure to fall in love and enjoy the wonderful world of beer.

  • HOME BREWING 101: ALL THAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED

HOME BREWING 101: ALL THAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED

Have you ever entertained the idea of making beer at home? Homebrewing is fun, easy. What starts as a hobby turns into an obsession and soon becomes a way of life. Welcome to your adventures in home brewing.

If you can make a lip-smacking mac and cheese or can create splendid omelettes, then you can brew your own beer. It isn’t as difficult as you imagine it to be. All you need is the passion and some basic knowledge of the science behind beer making.

In this article, we’re going to show you how to brew your first beer. Let’s first gather the supplies you’ll need.

    REQUIRED MATERIALS

    • A large kettle to boil beer
    • A large jug to ferment it
    • Hose/siphon
    • Dishwashing liquid and Sanitizer
    • Bottles with caps to store your beer
    • Ingredients for your beer like malt, yeast, hops, water and other additional flavours you want to include in your beer like priming sugar, honey

Apart from these, you’ll require other few supplies like a wooden spatula, spoon, thermometer, and ice that you can easily pick around the house.

Have you gathered your supplies? Let’s begin.

    CLEAN AND SANITIZE YOUR EQUIPMENTS

This is the most important step in brewing your homemade beer. An unclean or contaminated vessel can make your beer murky. Wash all the equipment you’ll be using and sanitize it to remove any germs.

    BREWING THE BEER

Alright, it’s time to start the actual brewing process. In fact, beer making is as easy as cooking mashed potatoes or brewing tea.

Heat around 1.25 gallons of mineral water. Once the water begins to boil add the crushed grains (you can use malted barley, rye or wheat) into it and let it steep for ten minutes. The liquid mixture is now called as wort or unfermented beer.

Boil the wort for around forty-five minutes. During the initial stages of boiling, add the malt extract and hops. At the end of the 45-minute mark, finish off with the flavouring agents like honey.

The next step is to cool the wort. Place the kettle in a sink filled with ice to cool it down quickly.

    FERMENTING THE BEER

This is the step where the magic begins to happen. Siphon a gallon of the cooled wort from the kettle to a jug for fermentation. Close the jar and shake to mix the liquid well. The next step is to add in yeast and to place a small device called fermentation lock on top of the jug.

Place your jug in a cool, dark space for around two weeks. As the beer begins to ferment, you can see frothy foam and bubbles forming in the liquid. This signals that your beer is ready to be used.

IT’S TIME TO SAMPLE YOUR HOMEBREWED BEER

The time required for fermentation depends on the ingredients, the recipe, and temperature. Once the beer is fermented pop open the jug and filter it into bottles or clean jars. Then add a few fizzing tablets into each container. These tablets carbonate your regular beer.

Now, store the beer at room temperature for a couple of weeks, after which you can refrigerate it.

Yes, we know that you can’t wait to taste the fruits of your labour. But, have patience and let the beer settle for a few weeks. The more you hold on, the tastier your beer will be.

SOME TIPS FOR BEGINNER HOMEBREWERS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED

Clean and Sanitize – We can’t stress this enough. Remember that even the slightest contamination can wreck the entire process. It’s better to err on the side of caution and ensure that you clean and sanitize all your equipment and vessels thoroughly.

Check out a Home brewing supply kit – Several brewers sell home brewing kits to help beginners get started. These kits contain all the ingredients that you require in the right amounts. A kit is an easy way to begin your home brewing adventure.

Approach your local craft brewer – The brewing community is one of the friendliest groups of people you’ll ever meet. The love for the drink is so evident that they will help you with valuable insights and tips.

Choose a recipe that you like – Don’t start with an exotic beer that you haven’t ever tasted. Instead, choose something simple that you enjoy. Once you get the hang of home brewing, you can experiment with new flavours.

Don’t bite more than you can chew – While the thought of brewing your annual supply of beer is enticing; start with small amounts like a couple of bottles. You can increase the amount as you gain confidence.

    HOME BREWING IS AN ADVENTURE

While it may appear daunting, brewing a single batch of beer at home is pretty easy. Gather up a few beer aficionados over the weekend and try your hand in brewing your own beer. Once you have tasted the fruits of your labour, we’re pretty sure that you’ll regularly brew at home.

    Enjoy the drink!

  • A CRAFT BEER A DAY CAN KEEP YOU, HALE AND HEARTY

A CRAFT BEER A DAY CAN KEEP YOU, HALE AND HEARTY

We can hear you saying, “Why differentiate between mass produced and craft beer?” Ultimately, it’s all beer, right? Well, No! Just like cheese and chalk are poles apart, craft beer and mass-produced, commercial beers fall on either end of the spectrum.

Even if we assume that both taste the same, which is highly unlikely, there are myriad other reasons, why you should reach for craft beer over commercial, bottled beers.

The next time you’re at your favourite watering hole, pause, scan the menu or ask your bartender for the best craft beer in the house. Not only will your taste buds thank you, but your entire body will applaud you for a smart choice.

Let’s take a closer look at the health benefits of drinking craft beers.

CRAFT BEER AND ITS ROLE IN HISTORY

Centuries ago, before bottling plants came into existence, there was only one way to brew beer. That is to make it fresh in taverns and serve directly to the patrons. Sounds a bit like our craft beers, ain’t it? In the Middle Ages (yeah, something similar to the time of Game of Thrones), hordes of people succumbed to deadly diseases, just by drinking contaminated water. Yep, water in those days was full of harmful bacteria and other parasites.

However, those who drank beer instead of sipping on dirty water survived. All the more reason, to cheer for beer drinkers! The reason behind this is that the bacteria in the water were killed during the brewing of beer. Thereby, beer was clean and parasite-free, while normal water wasn’t.

Ok, now coming back to the present, let’s take a look at how Craft Beer is beneficial to your Health.

CHOCK FULL OF ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS AND VITAMINS

Beer is rich in several minerals like potassium, biotin, chromium, magnesium, selenium, phosphorous and other B vitamins like Vitamin B12, B6, niacin, folic acid and riboflavin. Doesn’t it sound just like popping a multi-vitamin?

Jokes apart, beer plays a significant role in your body’s metabolism, the functioning of the nervous system, helps in the production of red blood cells, protects your cardiovascular system, improves intestinal functioning and boosts immunity.

In fact, recent studies indicate that beer is an excellent source of the gut-friendly probiotic bacteria. Instead of reaching for probiotic pills, you can sip on your favourite ale. That’s so good, ain’t it?

    ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI-MICROBIAL

Beer contains powerful anti-oxidants called as polyphenols and other phytonutrients that are anti-inflammatory. Both these nutrients are obtained from the raw ingredients like malt and hops that are used in the manufacturing of beer.

The sad fact is that industrially produced beer filters out both polyphenols and phytonutrients. Both these products add a thick texture to the finished product. Most big-scale breweries filter these to provide a clear, sparkling liquid.

On the other hand, craft beers do not make use of any industrial filters and are rich in polyphenols and phytonutrients.

    ANTI-CARCINOGENIC

Hops not only stabilise and preserve beer but also add a bitter taste to the sweet, fermented wort. Today, it has been found out that hops have anti-carcinogenic properties. Meaning they are effective in combating the growth of cancer cells. Xanthohumol and humulone, two ingredients present in hops, blocks the progression of tumour cells.

Craft beer contains ten to thirty times more hops when compared to commercial beers, thereby making craft beers pretty active in the fight against cancer.

HELPS YOU SLEEP BETTER AND REDUCES ANXIETY

The hops used in beer have been proven to produce a sedating effect and induces fitful sleep. Also, beers for a long time have been used to alleviate stress and other anxieties. The scientific reason behind this is that the female flower of the hops plant called as Humulus Lupulus L induces relaxation and causes sleep.

    TREATS THE SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE

If you thought that beer is a man’s drink, then you’re wrong. Craft beer helps not only menopausal women sleep better but also treats other conditions associated with menopause. The hops in craft beer secrete a substance called 8-prenylnaringenin that is considered as one of the most potent substances of phytoestrogen. It helps in relieving hot flashes that often occur during menopause.

HELPS IN MAKING YOUR BONES STRONGER

Osteoporosis is a condition where the tissues of bones deteriorate. People who suffer from this condition have a more porous bone structure when compared to others. Moderate consumption of craft beer improves bone density in two ways.

    • It has plenty of phytoestrogens that help to improve bone density.
    • The malts in beer are rich in bio-silicon. This compound is readily absorbed by the human body when compared to plant-based silicon.

Beers that are rich in hops and barley malts have more quantities of these two products.

MOVE OVER BOTTLED BEER, CRAFT BEER IS HERE TO STAY

Apart from the benefits mentioned above, craft beer has several other health benefits. It aids in digestion, improves the diversity of your gut flora and even helps in maintaining a thinner waistline. So,

if you’ve been reaching for craft beer all these days, you can consider that you’ve been doing your body good. If not, it’s time to swap out commercial beer for better tasting and healthier craft beer.

    Cheers!
